What are Peptides?

Peptides are a sequence of amino acids that are smaller than a protein. They are either produced naturally inside your body, obtained by eating certain foods, or can be made in a lab to be used as a form of medicine. In medicinal form, they are usually taken as a small subcutaneous (just under the skin) injection via an insulin syringe. This bypasses the effect stomach acid exerts on peptides when taken orally, degrading the peptides and decreasing efficacy.

Peptides are unique in that they tend to have very targeted effects on specific cellular processes within organs and tissues in the body. Peptides are used as a form of cellular communication, where they provide cell signaling. Once a peptide binds to a cell’s receptor, it causes the cell to turn on gene expression, achieving a specific desired effect. For example, a peptide called “Melanotan II” turns on the production of melanin (a brown pigment) in the skin giving a deep dark tan. CJC 1295, Ipamorelin, Sermorelin, and Tesamorelin all cause the release of growth hormone from the brain’s pituitary region, giving anti-aging benefits such as improved skin, hair, and lean muscle mass. Another peptide, PT-141, gives men terrific erections; in women, PT-141 significantly increases their arousal state. Many peptides offer exceptional benefits, whether a person is interested in weight loss, more incredible energy in the gym, or boosting the immune system.

So who benefits the most from peptide therapies? It depends upon the aims of the individual. I have all my patients list the top goals they wish to achieve so we can custom tailor the suitable peptide or peptides as well as supplements to help achieve those goals.

Here are some example goals one might want to address:

  • Weight Loss: Peptides can enhance weight loss by speeding up the rate of losing weight and or changing how much of the weight being lost is fat
  • Anti-aging: There is a large amount of fresh research implicating that through peptides and supplements, we can dramatically reduce the effects of aging on our bodies while improving our skin, hair, and sleep, as well as thwarting age-related diseases
  • Brain Fog: Peptides and supplements may Improve brain function by protecting against neurodegenerative disease and or boosting memory and focus
  • Fatigue or Reaching a Plateau in the Gym: What if I told you we could improve your aerobic state immediately so you can get back in the gym? Or, if you have reached a stalling point in your current regimen, we can take you to the next level while improving muscle mass, fat loss, and insulin resistance through peptide therapy.
  • Sports Injury: Peptides can speed up injury repair leading to fast recovery times
  • ED: As mentioned above, PT-141 has a remarkable benefit for men who suffer from ED, and in many cases, works when oral agents don’t

About the Author: Darryl S. Camp, M.D.

Dr. Camp is an accomplished Board-Certified Neurologist. He helped establish a new neurology residency in Austin Texas where he served as Program Director. He has been involved in numerous NIH funded and industry-sponsored trials. One of which would serve as a basis in his interest in regenerative medicine. Dr. Camp was a Principle Investigator in a trial whereby stem-cell precursors were injected in the carotid artery of stroke patients in an effort to re-grow blood vessels and tissue in the damaged brain. In the rat trials, rats regenerated brain tissue and recovered compared to the untreated rats. Fast forward to OB Men where Dr. Camp employs the use of Stem-Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, and other techniques to regenerate human tissue. Whether it is to grow new blood vessels or nerves in the case of erectile dysfunction, or to correct scars and tighten skin through collagen regeneration, or to regenerate joints or tendons that have been injured, you can be assured that OB Men is on the cutting edge of regenerative medicine.
